The Summer of YogaRhythms

10 Mar

I sometimes have to stop and pinch myself.. It’s been a wicked summer and now we’re GOING ON TOUR!

It all started with myself and the lovely Sarah Jane Perman brain-storming about how we could co-lab, and since we were both making our dusty pilgrimage to the Playa we thought we might as well aim high and kicked off the YogaRhythms thing at Burning Man 2013 (bit of a make shift one I might add! No microphone, and little direction).  Then we thought it would be a great idea to play at Wanderlust One day teaser events, so we created a facebook page, whacked up some artwork and put it out there.  Two Wanderlust events, A mini Auckland tour, a killer halloween show, and 5 festivals later we’ve got some crazy momentum going.

I’m not going to lie. I’m excited about this project. It kneads together my favourite things –  Yoga and music – in a kind-of holy matrimony.

SJ is now a global goddess sharing her art, yoga and spiritual work all over the world. YogaRhythms has morphed into a collective bringing together magical yoga teachers and me, R.I.A on the decks creating and designing, and holding the vibe with the playlist – mixed live of course. I’ve been blessed to be working closely with Kara-Leah Grant (The Yoga LunchBox) & more recently Shian Love (Live Bright Yoga) for Sundaise Festival in recent months.

It’s becoming apparent as to what possible the culture of yoga and dance. Yoga and music is not a new thing, but by doing it with intention and thoughtful collaboration we can bring people into a state of ecstasy, oneness and connection using movement and music as our vehicle, without the drugs of traditional dance culture.  We can get to a place where people can let go and free-dance, move and create a space for transformation. I feel this is all part of our universal healing and coming back to our natural state of humanness, letting go of constraints. No judgements. Just Move.

Movement IS Medicine

YogaRhythms is not just about yoga + dance, it’s a metaphor for those of us who dare to be different. To stand tall and not shy away, to dress bright to match the rays of light that shine from our heart, to experience true love and joy because this is our true nature – to be wild and free.

With this comes a love for the Earth, because as we stand there feeling the vibration of mother nature beneath our dirty festival feet we know she needs us to stand strong for her, to honour her, to treat her with care and to connect into her divine energy.

Mother Earth is the sentience or soul of our planet. A sentience is that which is conscious or aware of itself and its purpose.

This is why we’re so bloooooooooooown away to work with teeki to help share their vision here in NZ and help them reach more hearts, minds and souls with an experience that connects us to nature with movement and high vibration.

The TEEKI story is one that starts when a young woman had visions of a beautiful earth and a conscious community of lovers that care for the land, our oceans, and each other. What manifested from this vision was Teeki.

So yes.. Did I mention myself and Kara-Leah Grant are going on tour? Yes, that’s right folks. It might just be a mini one, but for us, to be on the road, heading to sunny summer towns in our home-land, doing what we love, is just freaking awesome.

What the people had to say….

“It was such a divine experience. It was the perfect harmony of Yoga, Dance, Rhythm, Movement, Breath and Flow. The amazing Kara-Leah Grant took us on a journey where you were able to completely let go of the outside world and blissfully melt into the present moment – energy flowing through the body and upwards – connected to Self, connected to each other, connected to the Earth, on an all natural high, collectively pulsing and vibing to the raddest tribal beats and tunes by the music Goddess Le Rire . I loved every moment and left totally buzzing and filled with Prana ♡”  – Rebecca White

“WOW what an incredibly freeing and wild experience we had Friday night at the Grey lynn community centre. Tribal bass , yoga and dancing are a few of my favourite things and to have them combined and facilitated by the beautiful powerhouse that is Karah-Leah Grant was just plain epic! Our energies were soaring afterward – full frothing! xxx” – Tara Cornelia

“What can I say apart from Wow!! It was just a great harmony between yoga, dance and flow!! It made me feel so alive, by the end of it I was buzzing naturally!! What I loved so much was how we were just practicing great yoga lead by Kara-Leah and then it just flowed into beautiful dance with epic music from RIA… ( really amazing tunes ). The transition of yoga to dance flowed so smoothly I didn’t know I was actually already dancing and really feeling the music!!
Thanks so much.,,, I really loved the vibe and can’t wait for more!! I’m totally hooked!!” – Laurie Flint

“I have to say – practicing yoga to music is a divine experience, especially when the selection has been made by someone who knows what they are doing. It was that much easier to let go of the outside world and melt into the breath, the moment, the body, the rhythm. As the energy spiralled up and up toward the peak of ecstatic movement, flinging ourselves around while maintaining connection to the earth and to each other, was a new kind of high that I haven’t experienced before. I am well-versed in losing myself to music, to my body – but Kara-Leah led us down a path that was entirely fresh – the key was in the connection. We danced while looking each other in the eyes. We moved outward and inward, and it felt beyond good to be so loose and wild while pulsing only to the inner fire – no other stimulants necessary (we-ell, except for the complementary glass of ayurvedic go-go juice handed out at the start).
My face hurt from grinning so hard. My body was sparked up with a healthy dose of prana. I left on a total high, and even thinking back on it gives me a buzz.
Thanks once again, you two sparkling beauties, for inviting us in and leading us along such a vivid journey.” Hannah Schenter

We were blessed to meet Ramin Krause, who is not only an exceptional photographer, but he’s also an entrepreneurial traveler currently moving around NZ, sleeping in a hammock and documenting his journey along the way. He was so keen on Wildlings, he hitched in from out west, and rocked up to the gig with a giant pack and camera in hand. He also joined us on our adventure to Waiheke. Ramin Krause, born 1994, is a photographer from Cologne, Germany that currently lives with Hippies in New Zealand.

Wander-March

19 Mar

It’s Wander-March. (Wanderlust Month in March).. It’s the pet name I have given it….  And rightly so.  It’s been Wander-fully weird and dramatically transitional so far. I took the ball and ran with it… This month has been anti-coffee, anti-alcohol, anti-gluten, anti-dairy and a daily commitment to yoga.  I’m not in this alone, my guy is with me all the way on the diet which makes this whole game super fun. This has been great, but we  have both developed cronik addiction to raw chocolate.. (got to replace the cravings with something right?)

So if you’ve been following this blog, you would’ve caught on that i’ve been involved as a DJ, performing as YogaRhythms (myself and SJ) and well as being a general hyper, crew member & yogi fly. I practice yoga, but i wouldn’t say i’m that good at it… Especially when I see some these incredible yogis and yoginis doing their thing. Their strength is mind blowing. One thing has lead to another and now it seems that I am enrolled in Yoga teacher training starting straight after Wander-Syds.  How did that happen? A great sales pitch perhaps? Or is this Wander-March taking me on a wild new ‘life’ adventure. I’ve always been about jumping in the deep end, but this is happening pretty fast. It’s Wander-March – Hold onto your feathered hat’s!

This is the beauty of Wanderlust. It’s bringing this incredible, ancient and beautiful art to the limelight. So many people discovering yoga, filling lives with possibility, openness, and access to a community of belonging, but is it happening too fast? Yoga is still in it’s infancy here in the west. Egos are in the way and shit get’s dramatic. Even in my novice experience i’ve seen it. We trip, we stumble, we have fear.. But when we come back to the breath, we grow courageous and strong. Yoga inspires us to be better people, to follow our hearts and to make a positive impact everywhere we go and to everyone we meet. This is what differentiates yoga from normal physical exercise – It’s the spiritual thrust and willingness to turn off the static and tune into the calm.

So here’s a few snaps from Wander-Melbs on the 10th of March.  Wander-Aucks is coming up THIS SUNDAY!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Unfort’s there will be no YOGARHYTHMS at the Wander-Aucks, as SJ has decided to stay in Sydney and continue her Wellness Warrior path, but there will be a very special collaborative performance in our place – More on that later….

Here was my Melb playlist for YogaRhythms – Check it
